Now hiring: Arts & Culture Associate

Smart Growth America (SGA) and its program Transportation for America (T4A) seek a personable, detail-oriented and creative individual to serve as an Arts & Culture/Outreach Associate, who will assist with growing & executing the organization’s key projects, communicate with members, non-members and others in an outreach and relationship building role, and assist in building SGA/T4A’s creative placemaking practice.

This is an entry to mid-level position that reports to and works closely with the Director of Arts & Culture, as well as other T4A and SGA staff.  Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work successfully with limited supervision, independently and within a team. The ability to work collaboratively and creatively within a distributed organization is vital to this position, as team members work in different locations. The ability to clearly and concisely communicate will be favored in the candidate selection process. In addition to other assignments and overall support as assigned, this position specifically supports the functions listed below.

This position will be located in our office in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

  • Project management: support T4A’s Cultural Corridor Consortium program by supporting subgrantees in three cities, visiting project sites, managing peer learning opportunities for subgrantees, and providing administrative support to the project.
  • Arts & culture communications: support the Director of Arts & Culture to bring national attention to and awareness of T4A/SGA’s creative placemaking practice and research by organizing webinars, conference presentations, and blogging.
  • Fundraising support: assist in seeking out, writing, executing, and reporting on new and existing grants to support SGA/T4A’s arts & culture efforts.
  • Trend identification and content creation: In collaboration with the other appropriate teams at SGA, the associate will identify trends in the transportation community writ large, leverage SGA’s existing content and create new and innovative content to support the organization’s mission.
  • Writing and research: research and write reports, executive summaries, case studies, and other documents related to SGA’s arts & culture and transportation work.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Special Knowledge and Skills

Required: 

  • Excellent time management and organization, research skills, customer service, organizational, and verbal and written communication skills;
  • Highly skilled and willing to sell a variety of audiences on new concepts and ideas;
  • Ability to strategically prioritize their workload and complete multiple tasks and high volume of work;
  • Knowledge of creative placemaking practices and experience implementing creative placemaking, public art, and/or tactical urbanism projects.
  • Excellent written/verbal skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Comfortable with working in a collaborative team environment;
  • High level of individual initiative and creativity, and;
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in grant writing and grant management;
  • Working knowledge of, and experience with the use of database management systems (preferably Salesforce) and with the production of data queries, reports, and forms;
  • Experience working with diverse populations;
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, and;
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint and comfortable working with iOS.

Compensation
