The ideal thriving communities program manager is keenly interested in how the built environment informs mobility independence and addresses racial inequities, has an analytical mind that can capture stories out of data, and finds satisfaction in working with communities to build their capacity to prioritize health, safety, and resiliency. They will be detail-oriented and able to juggle multiple projects, deadlines, and timelines. They are a dependable team player who can perform regular duties but are also enterprising and creative self-starters. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work successfully independently and within a team.

About Thriving Communities
The Thriving Communities Team, a part of Smart Growth America’s broader Transportation and Thriving Communities Team, works at the intersection of transportation, public health, and arts and culture, bringing in economic development, fiscal health, land use, racial equity, and climate resilience. It houses Smart Growth America staff who work on the National Complete Streets Coalition and our Arts and Culture programs. Through our work, we serve as a portal to connect communities to each other and to programs across Smart Growth America.
This position will be a part of the Thriving Communities team and will report to the Director of Thriving Communities.
Responsibilities
Programs and Technical Assistance Support
- Coordinate and provide support for Thriving Communities programs with an emphasis on work related to Complete Streets adoption and implementation at the local and state level; identifying and addressing barriers to collaboration around Complete Streets; and incorporating Complete Streets into broader safe transportation efforts.
- Scope, manage, and execute technical assistance for communities interested in drafting, adopting, and implementing Complete Streets policies and projects.
- Identify and implement ways to leverage technical assistance opportunities to advance racial equity and address disparities in transportation and health.
- Assist the Director of Thriving Communities with identifying opportunities to assess the evolution and success of the Complete Streets movement.
Communications and Storytelling
- Author and contribute content, in coordination with the communications team, for case studies, reports, and resources including notable publications Dangerous by Design and the Best Complete Streets Policy report.
- Prepare content to support Thriving Communities communications, including building and editing presentations, researching and adapting exercises and activities, creating worksheets, fact sheets, and informational documents, and other resources as needed.
- Serve as an ambassador for Complete Streets and SGA within the industry and related fields; deliver presentations and information to partners about SGA’s thought leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance efforts around Complete Streets.
Research and Analysis
- Conduct research and analysis of existing and upcoming Complete Streets policies and projects; conduct research and analysis of intersecting policies and issues related to Complete Streets.
- Summarize and distill analysis and program successes into clear reporting, recommendations, and story-telling for broader stakeholders and audience groups.
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate emerging best practices and trends in addressing the intersection of transportation, health, and equity to better amplify, coordinate, and potentially collaborate with other leading practitioners and innovators in the field.
Knowledge, skills, and experience
Required
- A college degree and 3-5 years of work experience including project management.
- Knowledge of and deep interest in the intersection of public health and transportation, especially as to how the built environment informs the way people move in and interact with their communities.
- Experience working in workshop design and facilitation, policy analysis and review, and/or report drafting and design.
- Strong written and verbal ability, research skills, and attention to detail.
- Ability and desire to connect with leaders, advocates, and practitioners engaged in transportation and health.
- Understanding and experience with program management as it fits into a broader portfolio of initiatives.
- Excellent time management and organization.
- Good interpersonal skills and comfort working in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred
- A graduate degree in health, transportation, planning, or other related fields.
- Work experience in the intersection of health and transportation, planning and design, or other related fields.
- Previous experience in local, regional, state, or federal policy as it relates to our subject matter.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Experience or demonstrable commitment in working on issues of equity vis-à-vis arts and culture, health, transportation, land use and development, climate, and/or livable communities.
Details
Compensation
Salary commensurate with experience and will range between $63,000-72,000. The successful candidate who would be in consideration for compensation near the top of this range will have more experience and/or at least two of the skills listed as preferred above. Benefits include health insurance, 401k, and paid vacation, and paid sick time.
Location and Vaccination
This position is based in Washington, DC. No relocation assistance is being offered at this time. Staff are currently working in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays while working remotely on Mondays and Fridays. SGA requires employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19 and boosted.
