Now hiring: Community Planning Intern

Smart Growth America is now hiring a paid Community Planning Intern to support our programs for local governments across the country. These programs include workshops on rural development, foundations for smart growth, complete streets, economic and fiscal health, rebuilding downtowns, and more.

This position reports to Smart Growth America’s Senior Policy Advisor and is an integral part of our technical assistance team. The Intern will play a vital role in managing the day-to-day operations of our workshops for local communities around the country.

Core responsibilities

  • Logistical and research support for workshops and events
  • Coordinating with workshop instructors and communities receiving workshops
  • Writing recap blog posts about the workshops
  • Providing administrative support to the team

Requirements
The position requires a self-motivated, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate logistics associated with event planning. The ideal candidate will have experience in event planning or logistics, be able to work independently with minimal supervision, and track and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Candidates should have a strong interest in smart growth, economic development, transportation, community growth or related areas. Candidates should also have at least a bachelor’s degree and an educational background or work experience in public policy, community planning, or a related field.

Compensation
Interns for this position receive a stipend of $920 every two weeks. In addition, he or she will have six days of paid personal leave and paid leave on all federal holidays that occur within the tenure at Smart Growth America. 

Timeframe and location
This position is full-time (40 hours a week). A commitment of six months is required. This position is based in Washington, DC.
