Now hiring: Content Associate

Communities across the country are creating vibrant downtowns, revitalized historic spaces, streets that are safe for walking and biking, and transportation systems that keep local economies running. Smart Growth America advocates for the policies that make these places possible.

We’re looking for a Content Associate to bring the stories of these places to our digital audiences. The Associate will be responsible for creating written and visual content that works on our website, in email blasts, and on social media. The portfolio will potentially include reports, blog posts, graphics, email blast language, technical memos, and social media assets on a range of topics related to neighborhood development and transit-oriented development in particular. This is an opportunity to contribute to the voice of the organization, communicate directly with supporters, and gain valuable hands-on production experience.

An ideal Content Associate will be an exceptional writer and editor, with a creative approach to content creation and a strong interest in cities and neighborhood development. A great Associate should be a dependable team player who can perform regular, detail-oriented duties while also being proactive and offering new ideas for how to make the Communications team’s work even better.

Responsibilities
The Content Associate’s primary responsibilities will be to support Smart Growth America’s diverse portfolio of programs. Specifically, this position will be asked to:

  • Translate our staff’s work into compelling content on SmartGrowthAmerica.org, T4America.org, and TODresources.org
  • Create engaging email newsletters and email blasts
  • Promote Smart Growth America’s workshops and staff speaking engagements
  • Contribute to our social media channels
  • Travel to select workshops, to assist with event logistics and cover the event for our audiences
  • Assist with our end of year fundraising campaign
  • Conduct outreach to allied organizations as part of report rollouts
  • Write, edit, and format longer-form reports and publications
  • Manage grants to a limited extent
  • Graphic design skills are a definite plus

Requirements
Demonstrably excellent and rapid writing skills. Candidates should have a solid understanding of how non-profits use social media, and a basic understanding of HTML, content management systems, and constituent management databases. Candidates should have at least a bachelor’s degree and should be very comfortable with digital communications. A demonstrated interest in local economic development, transportation, community growth, or related areas is encouraged. Experience with the Adobe Design Suite and/or HTML are a definite plus.

Compensation and location
This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Benefits include health insurance, 401(k), and paid vacation and sick time. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This position reports to the Communications Director.
