Partnership in the news: First TIGER-funded multi-modal transit project opens

Funded in part by a $22 million Department of Transportation TIGER grant, the first multi-modal transit project funded by TIGER has opened.

Uptown Station, located in downtown Normal, IL opened in July with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Normal mayor Chris Koos, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Transportation Sec. Ray LaHood.

Koos was excited about the station’s opening and what it would mean for Normal and the rest of the region, saying,

“It’s a fabulous facility for the community. I’m really excited about how Amtrak and regional and local buses are going to be able to take advantage of a much better facility.”

Sen. Durbin, channeling the buzz around Uptown Station’s opening, remarked,

“This investment, take a look at downtown Normal. This is like the anchor for the rebirth of this community. Every town downstate, every town across America can learn a lesson from downtown Normal.”
