Louisiana will take center stage next week in Washington as LOCUS honors two smart growth champions from the Bayou State at its upcoming Congressional Reception.

As part of the second annual LOCUS Leadership Summit, the 2013 Leadership Award will be presented to Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu and Pres Kabacoff, CEO of New Orleans-based developer HRI Properties, for their work to promote smart, sustainable development in Louisiana and across the country.

During her time in Congress, Senator Landrieu has been a steadfast supporter of smart growth. In particular, she has been a champion of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, an innovative collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Transportation to help improve access to affordable housing, create more transportation options and lower Americans’ transportation costs while protecting the environment in communities nationwide. Most recently, Landrieu co-authored a letter in the Senate supporting the federal Partnership for Sustainable Communities.

Senator Landrieu has supported smart growth policy, and HRI Properties’ CEO and LOCUS Steering Committee member Pres Kabacoff has helped build it. HRI Properties is a full-service real estate company based in New Orleans and a national leader in the adaptive reuse of historic structures. HRI’s projects, such as the 225 Baronne building in downtown New Orleans, have helped bring new life and activity to many communities and embody the principles promoted by the Partnership for Sustainable Communities and Smart Growth America.

Given their record of accomplishment, LOCUS is proud to honor Mary Landrieu and Pres Kabacoff with this year’s LOCUS Leadership Awards. The awards will be bestowed at LOCUS’ Congressional Reception on June 5, 2013. Last year’s honorees were Senator Mark Warner of Virginia and Senator Michael Bennett of Colorado.

The LOCUS Congressional Reception is part of the 2013 LOCUS Leadership Summit being held June 4 and 5, 2013 in Washington DC. The Summit gathers leading smart growth real estate developers from around the country to learn from each other, gain insights into key policy issues impacting smart growth real estate, and connect with Congress to promote reforms aimed at encouraging the type of sustainable, walkable development that the market is demanding.
