In an economic crisis like the one we face today, it’s more important than ever that people know how smarter growth can save communities – and all of us – money. The federal government decides how billions get spent each year in ways that affect your community. Your support helps Smart Growth America serve as your voice in these national debates.
When President Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus act in February that provided billions in flexible dollars to states for transportation, Smart Growth America answered the call and rallied groups together from states across the country to affect where that money would go.
We were able to provide over $1 million dollars in grants to 29 groups in 14 states, supporting and equipping them to make sure the transportation stimulus provides the biggest bang for the buck by investing first in fixing our crumbling infrastructure and building the kinds of transportation options Americans are clamoring for – efficient passenger rail, public transportation and streets safe for walking and biking.
Though it was an uphill battle, we had tangible victories:
In Oregon, work by our coalition fundamentally changed the direction of the State’s spending, helping to direct $100 million largely to bicycle and pedestrian facilities, public transportation and road repair. In California, our coalition was able to get $1 billion moved into a program dedicated solely to repair and maintenance. Seattle committed 20% of its $78 million in flexible stimulus funds to bicycle and pedestrian investments, double the usual percentage.
With Congress prepared to pass another jobs bill that will again have more money for states to spend on transportation, we’ll need to fight this same battle from the stimulus once again. Your support can help that effort, and help us support groups across the country.
We represent those who believe that the time for a new direction is now. We represent those who believe smarter growth is fiscally responsible, preserves our land and gives people affordable options for places to live and the means to get around in walkable, people-centric communities.
