The Environmental Protection Agency is currently accepting applications for its annual National Award for Smart Growth Achievement, due April 6th, 2012.

The award recognizes communities nationwide that have developed successful strategies for promoting and implementing sustainable practices in the economy, housing, transportation, and the environment. It is open to both public and private-sector entities, and the application can be submitted by either, but all applications have to include a public-sector partner.

Some changes have been made to the application since last year; there is now only one application form that encompasses Programs and Policies, Equitable Development, and Main Street or Corridor Revitalization. Additionally, an Overall Excellence award winner will be chosen from among the applicants in all of these categories.

More information about the application, as well as examples of previous award winners, can be found on the EPA Smart Growth Award website.
