This June, join LOCUS, in partnership with Smart Growth America’s First and Main coalition and the Transit-Oriented Development Peer Network, at the 2019 LOCUS Leadership Summit: Opportunity Rising to learn about critical real estate industry disruptors poised to transform the way people live, work, play, and move in our nation’s cities and towns. Expert speakers will provide insight into Opportunity Zones, the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on development and mobility, the future of walkable urban places, adapting for climate change, age, and population growth, and how private sector leadership is changing the 21st century knowledge economy alongside the form of the built environment.

We hope you will join us for this three-day conference of networking, learning, and deal-making amongst top industry visionaries and peers.

The 2019 LOCUS Leadership Summit: Opportunity Rising will take place at Convene, just across the Potomac River from Washington, DC. Convene is located at 1201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA.

Refund Policy:
All refunds requests must be received in writing to LOCUS at [email protected]. Written requests must be submitted by April 23, 2019 to receive a full refund of the registration fee, minus a $100 processing fee. If a request is received between April 23 and May 23, 2019, a 50% refund of the refund will be issued. No registration fee refunds will be issued after May 23, 2019. Verbal requests for refunds will not be accepted. All requests must be submitted in writing.

Meet the winners of the 2019 LOCUS Leadership Awards

Each year LOCUS honors some of the nation’s leading developers for their work with the Leadership Awards, awarded based on their exemplary commitment to public leadership, triple-bottom-line development, and smart growth. We received a record number of nominations this year and whittled those down to three finalists in each category (see all the finalists here).

The winners were announced at the LOCUS President’s Reception and Awards Dinner during the 2019 LOCUS Leadership Summit: Opportunity Rising on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

2019 Project of the Year:

Taylor Street Apartments and Library

The Project of the Year Award is presented to a project that has gone beyond good design to transform a community and create lasting value for the citizens who live there. This year, LOCUS was pleased to present the Project of the Year Award to the Taylor Street Apartments and Library project in Chicago, IL.

The project is a 120-acre, multi-phase, mixed-income development project including a public library branch that will ultimately bring more than 2,400 residences to Chicago’s Near West Side. Taylor Street is the result of a partnership between Related Midwest, the Chicago Housing Authority, and the Chicago Public Library System. The Little Italy Chicago Public Library branch invites apartment residents and members of the community to take advantage of daily on-site events and programming such as lectures, workshops, and book clubs.

2019 Company of the Year:

Cityview

The Company of the Year Award is presented to a company that has a clear history of public leadership in supporting projects that transform their communities and create lasting value for the citizens who live there. This year, LOCUS was proud to present the Company of the Year Award to Cityview in Los Angeles, CA. 

Cityview was founded in 2003 with a focus on urban infill development of multi-family housing. The company has projects in Texas, Colorado, the Northwestern United States, and California. Since its founding, Cityview has taken a unique, holistic approach to uncovering and tapping into the ideal urban way of life. The company has dedicated itself to developing in transit-oriented communities with high walk scores, including affordability components in neighborhood design, requiring “double bottom line” investment criteria, and focusing on environmental sustainability and LEED standards. Currently, Cityview is undertaking two projects in California’s newly designated Opportunity Zones. 

2019 Richard Baron Affordable Housing Award:

Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Community Development for All People

Ms. Mingo accepts the 2019 Richard Baron Affordable Housing Award on behalf of Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Community Development for All People.

The Richard Baron Affordable Housing Award is presented to an outstanding developer, company, or organization working to build attainable housing and ensure equitable outcomes. This year, LOCUS was proud to present the Richard Baron Affordable Housing Award to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Community Development for All People in Columbus, OH. 

In 2008, Nationwide Children’s Hospital established a partnership with Community Development for All People (CD4AP), a local community development corporation based on the South Side of Columbus. Together, the organizations formed Healthy Homes, an affordable housing entity designed to increase the availability of affordable housing units in the neighborhood immediate to the hospital campus. Since it inception, Healthy Homes has developed $80 million in affordable housing in targeted census tracts and restored over 75 percent of vacant, blighted homes there.

Healthy Homes is addressing key national and local policy issues through on-the-ground work to develop a sustainable mixed-income community that overcomes decades of disinvestment and racial segregation. Multi-sector collaboration combined with innovative financing are producing affordable rental housing in ways that forestall gentrification and reduce displacement of lower income residents.
