Safe Streets Academy winners announced — After a very competitive application process, we are excited to announce the winners of the Safe Streets Academy: Orlando, FL; Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, KY; South Bend, IN. These three jurisdictions will learn from national experts, collaborate with one another, and discuss best practices in engineering, tactical urbanism, creative placemaking, and community engagement.

City leaders have witnessed the positive returns of a place-based approach to economic development, but those efforts have largely originated outside of government. Macon’s Amazing Place leadership team of mostly elected officials wants to learn more about bringing those same strategies in-house.

Scores of cities are eager to build safer streets for all of their residents, but many also quickly discover the plethora of barriers that make it difficult to change years of practice. Our new Safe Streets Academy, announced today, is bringing together three jurisdictions in a collaborative environment to explore how to overcome those barriers and develop strategies for improving safety for all users of the street.
Last month the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a list of 19 recommendations aimed at reducing speeding-related injuries and fatalities. That full report was released yesterday and we had an opportunity to ask NTSB board member, T. Bella Dinh-Zarr, PhD, MPH about the study.
