Webinar next Tuesday: Complete Streets in Canada—This webinar will explore the uptake of the Complete Streets approach in Canada. We will be joined by Nancy Smith Lea, Director of the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) in Ontario, Peter Murphy, an Urban Designer for Quebec City, Quebec, and Ryan Martinson, an Associate at Stantec in Calgary, Alberta. Inspired by the National Complete Streets Coalition, in 2012, TCAT launched the Complete Streets for Canada website to track and promote Complete Streets in Canada, and to provide Canadian-specific resources and research.

Each year the Coalition releases an analysis and ranking of the best Complete Streets policies in the country based on 10 policy elements that were established more than a decade ago. The upcoming 2017 report will be the last one using our old policy elements. Next year, as we prep for the 2018 report, we will be using a brand new framework, released just a few weeks ago, to analyze and rank Complete Streets policies.

Complete Streets News – November 2017

We’ve officially revised our policy grading rubric, known as the 10 Elements of a Complete Streets Policy. The Complete Streets movement has evolved since it began in 2004 to focus far more on implementation and equity, but the framework for grading the quality of policies hasn’t kept pace.

November is Complete Streets month at Smart Growth America; we are sharing a series of blog posts that cover and explain each of the 10 revised policy elements in some detail. The entire revised framework will be available on our website on November 30, 2017.

MACOG launches a new, unified approach to Complete Streets — We’re working alongside the Michiana Area Council of Governments to provide technical assistance to communities throughout the Michiana region. For the first time, we are helping an MPO run a competitive application process for Complete Streets workshops on policy development and implementation. Apply now for the Safe Streets Academy— The National Complete Streets Coalition is excited to offer a new, free opportunity for technical assistance. The Safe Streets Academy will bring together engineers, planners, and related professionals from three jurisdictions for a year-long series of intensive, hands-on trainings on interventions to address traffic safety. Jurisdictions with populations of at least 100,000 are eligible to apply. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, July 16. Join us for an informational webinar tomorrow, June 23 at 1:00 PM EDT for an overview of the Academy and a chance to ask questions.
