Local leaders in Lowell, Massachusetts are working hard to make their streets safer and more accessible, passing a Complete Streets policy several years ago and advancing or completing a number of recent projects that prioritize the need to make streets safe and convenient for users of all ages and all abilities.
This month, the Complete Streets team returned to Knoxville, TN for the third and final workshop of the Tennessee Consortium Series. Despite the weather’s best efforts (it turns out, a frozen street is not a Complete Street), not even a snowstorm could stop us from convening for two last days of intensive hands-on learning.
During Intersections, we’ll hear from the team at Washington DC’s Office of Planning who have been spearheading the District’s biggest and most innovative creative placemaking program to-date. Since 2016, the projects coming from this program have strengthened community bonds and collaboration, activated public spaces, and showcased community culture and heritage.
The National Complete Streets Coalition is excited to continue our monthly webinar series designed to help professionals from a variety of disciplines put Complete Streets principles into action. Implementation & Equity 201: The Path Forward to Complete Streets is exploring a new issue each month related to creating safer, healthier, more equitable streets.

Last week during the 2018 Transportation Research Board meeting, the National Complete Streets Coalition hosted the Eighth Annual Complete Streets Dinner in Washington D.C. We were joined by over 70 Complete Streets partners, advocates, supporters and friends who came together to share a meal, get to know each other, and celebrate the Coalition’s 2017 milestones.
Webinar next Tuesday: Complete Streets in Canada—This webinar will explore the uptake of the Complete Streets approach in Canada. We will be joined by Nancy Smith Lea, Director of the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) in Ontario, Peter Murphy, an Urban Designer for Quebec City, Quebec, and Ryan Martinson, an Associate at Stantec in Calgary, Alberta. Inspired by the National Complete Streets Coalition, in 2012, TCAT launched the Complete Streets for Canada website to track and promote Complete Streets in Canada, and to provide Canadian-specific resources and research.
